Ann A. Abbott, PhD, LCSW, ACSW
Former Chair, NASW Insurance Trust
Ann A. Abbott had been active in NASW both locally in Pennsylvania and nationally before becoming the NASW 22nd national president on July 1, 1993. She served as President of the Pennsylvania Chapter from 1987-89. Throughout her ongoing career she has served on numerous committees, including Chair of the NASW Insurance Trust and member of the Ethics Review Board and various NASW editorial boards as well as Chair of the NASW Book Committee. Currently she serves as a member of the PA Ethics Committee and a national presenter for NASW ASI risk management workshops.
Abbott is a nationally recognized expert on substance abuse, mental health, risk management, Malpractice, and social work values and ethics. Between 2001-2013 she served as Professor and Chair of the Graduate Social Work Depart at West Chester University (PA). Previously she was a faculty member and Associate Dean in the School of Social Work at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. (1981-2001). At present, she serves as a Bryn Mawr College Research Associate and as co-chair of the BMC Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Board of Advisors. In addition, Dr. Abbott teaches part-time at Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Yeshiva University (NY).
Abbott received her BS degree in Psychology from St. Norbert College, Wisconsin, and her MSS and Ph.D. degrees from Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. She completed the HERS program for women in administration and the American Group Psychotherapy Training Program.
Trustee, NASW Insurance Trust (1995–1998); National Board of Directors (1988–1995); National Board Executive Committee (1992–1995); President, Pennsylvania Chapter (1987–1989). She is currently a presenter for the NASW Assurance Services Risk Management Program.
